Everyone loves a top water bite and especially on a Buzz Bait. But imagine catching a 6 or 7 lber in the black dark of the night on a buzz bait. Several years ago I was introduced to this way of fishing by some guys form a neighboring county. We drove down to Cherokee lake in Tennessee one weekend and the first night I ever tried this we had over 25lb in just 5 fish.

As years have passed I still get excited when some of my friends like Buzz Bait Bobby calls me and says, Man there on! The last 2 years I have got to fish with Bobby on a couple of night time Buzz Bait trips and every one of them have been awesome. Warning if you have bad nerves or a heart condition then this may not be the thing for you to do.

Put yourself out on the lake around midnight both you and your partner standing on the front of the boat paralleling the bank with long casts and slowly cranking the Buzz Bait just enough to keep it on top of the water. (This is where we get the Bloop Bloop Sound from.) It’s completely dark out and you have no lights on when suddenly it sounds like someone just flushed a commode on top of your Buzz Bait and you feel a big tug and can’t see a thing. I recall one trip that we had last year on another Tennessee Lake that the fish would hit it so hard that we actually had to pull a few off of the bank as they hit it and went out on dry land with it. The late fall is the perfect time to do this and let me tell you that this is when then big ones are out feeding up for the winter months.

There a couple of tips that I have learned over the years that will help. One is that a lot of people don’t realize it but they make Buzz Baits that run to the right and some that run to the left. So I like to fish off the right side of the boat so I like the Buzz baits that run to the right other then to the left. I also prefer to use a high gear ratio reel and I use a fiberglass cranking rod. The cranking rod is limber and it helps you give the fish a little more time to jerk once the fish hits your Buzz Bait. I also prefer braided line on my reels because you got to remember that it is totally dark and you do tend to throw up on the rocky banks a lot and even in the tops of bushes and other things that will weaken regular monofilament line. Another great tip is to make sure when you go out to do this type of night fishing or any other night fishing is to have Lid lights installed under all your compartments. With these high quality lights in your boat it will make life a whole lot easier from changing baits to grabbing you favorite beverage out of your cooler. So check them out at www.thelidlight.com
